WEEK 10

 

1.0.8 Describe characters, plot, setting and problem/solution of a passage. 1.0.9 Explain a character’s actions based on a passage.

 

POS- Students will recognize characteristics and elements of different kinds of works.

1.3.2 How properties (commutative, associative, identity properties of addition and multiplication, zero property of multiplication) are used in computation.  4.1.2 Number sentences with a missing value or variable.  4.2.3 Find solutions to number sentences with a missing value.

 

POS- Students will explore variables and solve equations using variables.

5.1.2 History can be understood by using a variety of primary and secondary sources and tools (artifacts, diaries, time lines).  5.2.1 Native American cultures, both in Kentucky and the United States, had similarities (gender roles, family organization, religion, values) and differences (language, shelter, tools, foods, and clothing).  5.2.4 The study of U.S. history is categorized  into broad historical periods and eras (Land and People before Columbus, Age of Exploration, Colonization, War for Independence, the Young Republic, Westward Expansion, Industrialism, the Twentieth Century). 

 

POS- Students will understand different groups throughout Kentucky’s history and their reasons for exploring and/or

 

 

settling in Kentucky.  Students will develop a chronological understanding of Kentucky’s early development as a territory and state. 

1.3.2 Heat can be produced in many ways such as burning or rubbing.  One way heat can move from one object to another is by conduction.  Some materials absorb and conduct heat better than others.

POS- Students will understand how humans have interacted with the physical environment to meet their needs in Kentucky and regions in the United States.  Students will recognize how lifestyles and conditions have changed over time in Kentucky.  Students will recognize how the physical environment, especially in the past, limited and promoted human settlement and

activities in Kentucky.

2.2.1 The Sun provides the light and heat necessary to maintain the temperature of Earth.  The Sun’s light and heat are necessary to sustain life on Earth.  3.1.2 Organisms have basic needs.

4.4.1 People depend upon the physical environment for food, shelter, and water.  4.4.2 People adapt to or modify the environment (produce food, build shelter, make clothing) to meet their needs.  4.4.3 The physical environment both promotes and limits human activities (mountains as barriers are or as protection, rivers used as boundaries or transportation routes).

3.1.1 Things in the environment are classified as living, nonliving, and once living.  3.1.3 Each plant or animal has structures that serve different functions in growth, survival, and reproduction.

WEEK 13

 2.0.9 Make predictions and draw conclusions based on what is read.

 

POS- Students will employ reading strategies (word analysis, re-reading, context clues, pre-reading, raising questions, predicting, drawing conclusions).

1.1.2 The operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  1.2.2 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers using a variety of methods (mental, paper/pencil, calculator).

 

POS- Students will understand

 

and apply computational procedures for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers using memorized basic facts. 

4.3.1 Human populations gather in groups of different sizes and in different locations in the world.  5.2.2 People explored and settled America and Kentucky for multiple reasons (freedoms, opportunities, fleeing negative situations).

 

POS- Students will explore different perspectives and interpretations of Kentucky history by

 

using primary and secondary sources, artifacts, and time lines.

3.2.1 Plants and animals have life cycles that include the beginning of life, growth and development, reproduction, and death.  3.2.2 Plants and animals closely resemble their parents at some time in their life cycle.   

POS -  Students will understand that organisms have life cycles that are different for different organisms.

2.1.1 Language, music, art, dress, food, stories, and folk tales help define culture and may be shared among various groups.  5.2.3 The way we live has changed over time for both Kentuckians and Americans because of changes in many areas (communication, innovations/inventions, homes, transportation, recreation, traditions, education). 

 

POS- Students will recognize the elements of culture using different groups from Kentucky’s past and regions of the United States as examples.  Students will recognize how lifestyles and conditions have changed over time in Kentucky.

3.3.2 The world has many different environments.  Distinct environments support the lives of different types of organisms.  When the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce, and others die or move to new locations.

POS- Students will understand that organisms’ patterns of behavior are related to the nature of organisms’ environments.  Students will understand that Earth’s materials have different physical and chemical properties and provide resources that humans use.

3.3.2 Improving environmental conditions (air and water quality) and preserving natural resources impact personal and community health.  1.8.4 Coping strategies (goal setting, time management, decision-making processes) promote mental and emotional health. 

 

POS- Students will identify community guidelines (animal control, sanitation, immunization) that promote healthy environments.

WR-E—1.4 Transactive writing is informative/

Persuasive writing that presents ideas and information for authentic audiences to accomplish realistic purposes like those students will encounter in their lives.  In transactive writing students will write in a variety of forms such as the following:  letters, speeches, editorials, articles, proposals, brochures other kinds of practical/workplace writing. 

 

WEEK 16

 1.0.7 Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and plays.

 

POS- Students will

 

recognize characteristics and elements of different kinds of works.

 

1.1.1Democratic governments function according to the needs and wants of the citizens and provide for society’s needs (police and fire departments, education, highways).  1.1.2 The purpose of a government’s rules and laws (U.S. Constitution, school rules) to establish and maintain order.

 

POS- Students will understand the basic purposes of  government in Kentucky including the establishment and maintenance of order, the protection of rights of individuals, and the promotion of the common good.

 

 

2.1.3 Fossils found in Earth materials provide evidence about organisms that lived long ago and the nature of the environment at that time.

WEEK 17

1.0.10 Connect literature to students’ lives and real world issues.

 

POS- Students will understand and respond to a variety of reading materials, making connections to students’ lives, to real world issues, and/or to current events.

 

2.1.2 Elements of culture (language, music, art, dress, food, stories, folktales) serve to define specific groups and may result in unique perspectives.  2.2.1 All cultures develop institutions, customs, beliefs, and holidays reflecting their unique histories, situations, and perspectives.

 

POS- Students will understand similarities and differences in the

 

ways groups and cultures within Kentucky and regions of the United States address similar needs and concerns.  Students will recognize the elements of culture using different groups from Kentucky’s past and regions of the United States as examples.

 2.3.2 Weather changes from day to day and over seasons.  Weather can be described by observations and measurable quantities such as temperature, wind direction and speed, and precipitation.
