WEEK 19

WR-E-1.3  Literary writing artfully communicates with the reader about the human condition.  Literary forms in the portfolio include poems, short stories, and scripts.

 

POS-

Students will write literary pieces that show an understanding of characteristics of literary works.

3.2.8 Determine the fairness of games using simple probability activities 3.3.2 How predictions can be based on probability data

 

POS- Students will make predictions to determine the fairness of possible outcomes of simple probability experiments using a variety of appropriate manipulatives.

 

3.2.7 Generate all possible outcomes in simple probability activities

 

POS- Students will use counting techniques and/or tables to explore probability experiments.

 

3.4.2 The government provides goods and services and pays them with taxes.  Private businesses offer similar goods and services for profit.

 

POS- Students will understand economic concepts and use them appropriately in context to explain conditions or events in Kentucky history and regions of the United States.

2.1.1 Earth materials include solid rocks and soils, water, and the gases of the atmosphere.  Minerals that make up rocks have properties of color, texture, and hardness.  Soils have properties of color, texture, the capacity to retain water, and the ability to support plant growth.  2.1.2 Earth materials provide many of the resources humans use.  The varied materials have different physical and chemical properties, which make them useful in different ways.

 

POS- Students will understand that Earth’s materials are solids, water, and gases.

WEEK 20

Literary writing –

Characteristics of literary writing may include:  literary elements of the selected form (short story – character, poem – rhythm, script – stage

2.4.2 Compromise and cooperation are tools for social interaction.  3.2.2 The U.S. economic system has financial institutions 3.2.3 The U.S. economic system is based on free enterprise where businesses seek to make profits by producing or selling goods or services.

 

POS- Students will recognize how tensions and conflict can develop between and among individuals, groups, and institutions.

 

1.5.1 There are body changes that occur during physical activity.

 

POS-Students will evaluate their own progress toward fitness goals using appropriate instruments.

 

WEEK 21

Literary writing-

 

Descriptive language

Literary devices- personification, end rhyme, similes, metaphors

1.2.3 Add and subtract fractions with like denominators; add and subtract decimals through hundredths  

POS- Students will understand and apply computational procedures for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers using memorized basic facts.

3.1.3 Every time a choice is made, and opportunity cost is incurred.  Opportunity cost refers to what is given up when an economic choice is made. 

3.2.1 Economic systems can be large or small

 

POS- Students will recognize that economic systems are created to deal with the problem of scarcity.

 

1.5.2 There are numerous benefits of exercise on the body.

 

POS- Students will explain the relationship of exercise to fitness and wellness.

 

WEEK 22

Literary writing-

 

Effective ordering of events, impressions, and descriptions

Creation of an effect- comedy, suspense, horror

Focus on an engaging an audience.

POS- Students will understand and apply computational procedures for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers using memorized basic facts.

 

3.1.1 Productive resources (land, labor, capital) are limited and do not satisfy all the wants of individuals, societies, and governments (scarcity)

 

POS- Students will understand the basic economic problem of scarcity (imbalance between unlimited wants and limited resources) and recognize how people have addressed the problem through decision making

2.3.1The surface of the Earth changes.

POS- Students will understand that Earth’s surface changes are due to slow (weathering) and rapid (volcanic eruptions) processes.

3.1.2 Products and services are compared and evaluated based on price, quality, and features. 

 

POS- Students will apply decision-making strategies when buying products based on price, features, and quality.

 

3.3.2Revise a short story passage into a simple dialogue format.

 

WEEK 23

Reflective writing- The reflective form in the portfolio is the Letter to the Reviewer, which contains discussion of the student’s personal growth as a writer and reflection on pieces in the portfolio.

1.2.9 Order and compare whole numbers and fractions 1.3.1 How fractions, decimals, and whole numbers relate

 

POS- Students will compare unit fractions using manipulatives.  Students will develop equivalent relationships between common fractions, decimals, and whole numbers.

3.1.1 There is a distinction between needs and wants.

 

POS- Students will analyze differences between needs and wants and provide examples.

 

WEEK 24

Reflective writing- includes the writer’s examination of his/her writing skills, abilities, approaches, and products.

Division - Thousands divided by 1 digit divisor with remainders.

3.4.3 Producers who specialize create specific goods or services

 

POS- Students will understand that producers create goods and services and consumers make economic decisions and choices.

1.2.1 The position of an object can be described by locating it relative to another object or the background.  The position can be described using phrases such as to the right, to the left, 50 cm from the other object.  1.2.2 An object’s motion can be described by measuring its change in position over time such as rolling different objects down a ramp.

POS- Students will understand that the position and motion of an object can be described by comparing it to another object or background.

1.5.4 Health-related fitness includes many components.

 

POS- Students will perform stretching, strengthening, and cardiorespiratory  exercises.

 

WEEK 25

Reflective writing- may include discussion of:  goals as a writer, growth as a writer through the years, influences on the writer’s progress and growth.

.3.4.1 Producers create goods and services; consumers make economic choices about which ones to purchase 

1.2.3 The position and motion of objects can be changed by pushing or pulling.  The amount of change in position and motion is related to the strength of the push or pull.  The force with which a ball is hit illustrates this principle.

 

POS-  Students will understand that the position and motion of an object can be changed by pushing or pulling.

POS- Students will use elements of music while performing, singing, instrument playing, moving, listening, reading, writing, and creating.

 

WEEK 26

Reflective writing- may include discussion of strategies used during the development of pieces, selection of portfolio pieces, application of writing process

2.2.7 Choose appropriate tools (protractors, meter sticks, rulers) for specific measurement tools.  2.2.8 Identify measurable attributes of an object and make an estimate using appropriate units of measurement

2.2.9 Use measurements to describe and compare attributes of objects

3.3.1 A market exists whenever buyers and sellers exchange goods and services.  Prices and availability of goods and services are determined by supply and demand

3.3.2 The direct exchange of goods and services is called barter.  Money has generally replaced barter as a more efficient system for exchange

1.2.4 Vibration is a type of motion.  Sound is produced by vibrating objects.  The pitch of the sound can be varied by changing the rate of vibration.

POS- Students will understand that sounds are caused by vibrating objects.

WEEK 27

Reflective writing

2.3.3 How units within the same measurement system are related

 

POS- Students will relate time to days, weeks, months, and years.

3.2.4 Profit is the difference between revenues and the costs entailed in producing or selling goods or services.

1.3.4 Magnets will attract and repel each other, and magnets attract certain kinds of other materials. 

 

POS- Students will understand that magnets attract and repel each other as well as other materials.
