The Day I Proved Something to My Brother

Have you ever been to the hospital? Well I have! It all started one dramatic summer evening in my Granny’s living room.  My mom and granny were, as usual, talking.  My Dad and Papa were looking at tools while my brother and I were watching TV.  It was looking like a normal day at the Fox residence until…

My evil brother and I started arguing when he scoffed, “You can’t do a cartwheel!”  Like always I was determined to prove my brother wrong!  I wanted to show him I could do a cartwheel so he would stop teasing me.   As I bravely stood up I was prepared to be as graceful as a gymnast.  I glided across the carped floor like Keri Strug and I was doing the most fantastic job then suddenly, pop went my ankle!  My dream of performing a graceful cartwheel was shattered and I was in misery. It felt like a 1,000 pound weight had been dropped on my ankle!

The next thing I remember was my Mom and Granny heard me crying like a baby so they jumped up and ran over to see want had happened.  My Mom took a look at it then she sent my brother to go find my Dad and my Papa, and have them to come in the house.  The knot on my foot was as big as a watermelon!  When dad came in he picked me off the floor and rushed me to the hospital.

Dad went flying up the road like bird out of a cage. At this point I was thinking How could I have been going to the hospital over hurting my ankle?  At the hospital mom picked me up out of the car and carried me in the hospital waiting room.  The giant waiting room had tons of people in it patiently waiting for a doctor to see them. A nurse came in and called “Nikki Fox, the doctor is ready to see you now.” That was me!  As I slowly hobbled up I started to panic.  What were they going to do to me when I got in there?  Was I going to make it though this tragedy?  This nurse, named Anna, had mom put me in a green chair so she could take my temperature and then she put this blue strap on my arm and pumped it up until it became real tight on my arm! It felt like a knife was cutting my arm off!

I was then taken into a small room and the nurse laid me on the bed.  Mom, who was worried to death, sat down with me.  Then this doctor, named Nigam, came in the room and looked at my foot. He asked me where it hurt. When he asked me were it hurt I thought, Well it’s right in front of your face!  I raised it and showed him that it hurt on top of my foot where the knot was located. The knot looked like a huge hump in my foot! He explained to me that I was going to have a x-ray of my foot. I was scared at first because I’d never done this before. I didn’t know what to expect. I thought that they were going to have to give me a shot then put a huge TV. This nurse came in and asked Mom to put me in a wheel chair, and then she rolled me in this room that had a huge screen. The screen was in a gigantic room. Then I had to put my foot in front of the screen and it took a picture.  I didn’t hurt one bit!  It was a bit exciting even! I thought it was exciting because all of this time I was scared, but I found out it was just a huge screen that didn’t even touch me.

When I finally was rolled back to my room the doctor came in and told mom that my ankle was broken and he would need to call another doctor to come in and look at my foot.  We waited for the other doctor to come in and he introduced himself as Dr. Lane. He was very nice and funny. Dr. Lane told me silly jokes to make me feel better.  He explained he was going to put a cast on my leg.  He told me I had to wear it for 6 weeks.  I could not get it wet or it would come off.  All I could think about was my leg getting sweaty and start to stink.  No one would want to be around me then!

The nurse wrapped my leg in a wet wrap.  The wrap stunk really bad and it was sticky. The wrap turned hard and white.  By this time I was ready to go home.  Anna the nurse was so nice to me she pushed me out to the car in the wheel chair. From this misery I learned that if I need to prove something to my brother I will be more careful when I do it!
